Inspiration Peak, Minnesota

One of the many things I love doing when traveling, and even in my spare time is hiking and going on trails. Since I was a kid, on of my favorites was going to a place called Inspiration Peak. Located not far from the Continental Divide, in Clitherall Minnesota, is the 1,750 feet above sea level peak and is the highest point in Ottertail County Minnesota. Inspiration Peak got it’s name due to the author Sinclair Lewis going there to gain “inspiration” for his novels, short stories, and plays. He wrote about the peak saying,“There’s to be seen a glorious 20-mile circle of some 50 lakes scattered among fields and pastures, like sequins fallen on an old paisley shawl.”, and would rebuke Minnesotans for not knowing the beauties we had around us, such as the peak. Many people are unaware of Inspiration Peak, especially if you are not from the area. From the top of the peak you can see 4 counties and a few water towers! It’s considered a wayside and was dubbed that in 1932. This is one of my favorite places to go and take people to. It’s very peaceful and makes you feel renewed, motivated, and inspired! I see why Sinclair Lewis liked the peak so much. I go at least once a year and it never gets old to me. For those that may have trouble with getting up the steep parts there are plenty of railings and benches, there are also picnic tables and restrooms available. Near the entrance of the park part of the peak is a restaurant called The Peak Supper Club for anyone that would rather go relax and eat after the hike. If you ever find yourself in the area or looking to travel the state of Minnesota, I highly recommend putting this place on your list to visit. I also recommend coming at the beginning of summer when it’s still a bit cool and also come in the fall when the leaves start to change, personally those are the prettiest times to visit Inspiration Peak.
