See Rock City

If you’ve ever been down in southern U.S. you may have noticed barns along the highways that have “See Rock City” painted on their roofs and on the side of the barns. Some of you may know what is, other not so much. Rock City is located outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee at Lookout Mountain. It was mentioned in two diaries during the Civil War, one was in the diary of a Union Soldier, the other a Confederate Nurse, that from the top you could see 7 states. It wasn’t until the 1930s that Rick City would become what it is today. Garnet and Freida Carter started their adventure into creating a new community and mini golf course in 1924, but construction took too long. Garnet was working on making the golf course and his wife Freida, with her love of European Folklore, worked on creating a fairy tale community full of imported German gnomes and other fairy tale characters. The entire fairy tale community is 700 acres, and encompasses all of Rock City. There are many trials all through the park that show off all of the natural wonders that are there as well, such as Needles Eye, the Look out, Lover’s leap, the gardens, and the Swing-a-long Bridge. I loved visiting Rock City, and anytime I get asked where people should go when they go down south this is at the top of my list of suggestions. I love fairy tales and folklore so naturally I was drawn to this place. Then my family and I went there and I found out about all the trails and history, I got even more excited. As I stated in post about Inspiration Peak, MN, you can see 4 counties from the top, so you can only imagine my excitement of getting to see 7 states from a single point. Now, I know hearing fairy tales, can make you think it’ll be more little kid like or more girly, but my brother and dad loved it just as much as I and my mom did. It made you feel like you were in another world and every time you turned you found more and more things that took your breath away. The rock formations are all natural and the gardens are home to over 400 native plants. Rock City does host events like weddings or reunions. They are also pet friendly and on their website even lists nearby pet friendly hotels. Rock City has roughly 500,000 people who visit each year, will you be apart of the half a million? I hope to go back here soon.
